Purebred. Pure hearts.

AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD SIRES
OUR GORGEOUS GENTS

HIPPO
Hippo is a classic Aussie - sharp as a tack, full of energy, and gentle. He forms strong human bonds quickly and never met a toy he didn’t love. A black bi with one brown eye and one blue, we love watching his happy trots around our home. Hippo thinks he is my favorite. I can't "bear" to break it to him, so I let him live life in happy oblivion with all the hugs and deep gazes into my eyes he wants.
An AKC/ASCA/ASDR purebred, we have been thrilled with the beautiful, strong litters he throws! Good boy, Hippo!

BEAR
We love all our babies, both temporary and permanent, at Discovery Hill Australian Shepherds, but if we were to play favorites … Bear may just top the list. He has that fascination with people that you want in a family dog. There is nothing like waking up to his happy spins and huge saucer eyes saying how much he loves you!
That mellow temperament mixed with his good looks and show coat make a stunning combination. We count ourselves extremely lucky to have found Bear and brought him into our home.
A purebred, AKC-registered black tri, Bear is in his prime stud years and in excellent health. Champion and Grand Champion bloodlines include Prestige, Heatherhill, and Shoreland. And his application to be dual-registered with the ASDR has just been approved! A now-proven sire, Bear is a perfect gentleman who just wants to steal your heart.

Of 24 tests, two came back positive for carrier genes. One variant is auto-recessive (and thus a non-issue for a sire or his offspring, as none of our dams carry it). The second is auto-dominant - Bear carries one allele of a gene causing a sensitivity to prescription drugs known as Multi-Drug Resistance ("MDR1").

We breed both out by selecting mates with clear panels of genetics; however some puppies may receive one copy of the MDR1 gene (also known as "ivermectin sensitivity"). While very common in shepherding breeds, this should nevertheless be discussed with your vet to prevent the administration of an improper medicine that the dog's body cannot breakdown. If a veterinarian prescribes an improper drug to an MDR1 carrier, it can lead to serious neurological side effects. Thus communication is paramount with your vet practitioner to ensure the best outcome for your dog.

Learn more about breeding best practices and current science for shepherding breeds, especially Collies and Australian Shepherds, where MDR1 is common. This gene is present in about half the Aussie population in the US and worldwide, requiring careful consideration to genetic pairings when planning a litter to ensure the best lives for the next generations.
